A hardwired GPS tracker is more reliable than a portable one for exactly one reason: it's wired into the vehicle instead of running on a battery. That same wiring is also the one part of the process that trips people up. Here's what's actually involved, and how to decide whether to do it yourself or hand it to a professional.
The 3-wire basics
Most hardwired trackers, including our GV53MG, use a simple 3-wire connection:
- Black wire → Ground
- Red wire → Constant 12V source (power that's always on, even with the ignition off)
- White wire → Switchable 12V source (power that's only on when the ignition is on - this is what enables ignition-status reporting and kill switch functionality)
The tracker is typically mounted behind the dashboard, in a discreet, out-of-sight location with access to the vehicle's wiring harness.
When DIY installation makes sense
If you're comfortable with basic 12V automotive wiring and your vehicle has a traditional key-and-ignition system, DIY installation is realistic:
- You'll need a multimeter to correctly identify constant vs. switched 12V wires
- Basic tools: wire strippers, electrical tape or connectors, a trim panel removal tool

When to call a professional instead
We recommend professional installation (an audio shop, auto electrician, or mobile installer) if:
- Your vehicle has push-button start - these systems route power differently, and miswiring can affect the vehicle's factory electronics
- You're installing a kill switch feature - since this interrupts the starter circuit, a mistake here can leave you stranded or, done incorrectly, create a safety issue
- You want it truly hidden - professionals know where to route wiring so it's not visible or easily found
- It's a fleet or rental vehicle - consistency across multiple vehicles matters, and warranty/liability considerations are cleaner with a documented professional install
Most audio installation shops and mobile auto electricians can install a hardwired tracker in under an hour.
Common installation mistakes to avoid
- Connecting to the wrong "constant" wire - some circuits that seem constant are actually tied to accessory mode and will cut out, silently disabling tracking
- Skipping the ground test - a poor ground connection is the most common cause of a "tracker not reporting" support call
- Mounting somewhere that blocks GPS signal - wrapping the unit in metal shielding (like inside a metal dash brace) can weaken the GPS fix
Bottom line
DIY is doable if you're wiring-comfortable and your vehicle has a standard ignition system.
